What Causes Traction Alopecia?

Most forms of hair loss are caused by genetic or biological factors. However, traction alopecia is caused by hair styling methods which add strain and tension to the hair shafts and hair follicles.

This constant pulling can damage the follicles. They are then susceptible to bacterial infections, inflammation and scarring. Once damaged, they are not able to grow hair.

What Hairstyles and Techniques Put me at Risk for Traction Alopecia?

  • Extensions

Extensions are hair pieces attached very closely to the scalp using clips, metal rings, keratin tubing, or adhesive. These attachments can be made of synthetic or real hair.

  • Weaves

Weaves are a type of extension. The individual’s natural hair is braided tightly against the individual’s head. And the hair pieces are sewn into this braided structure.

  • Tight ponytails

Although traction alopecia is usually associated with hair extensions, tight ponytails can also contribute to this condition.

  • Cornrows

Cornrows are a special braiding technique. The braids are created so that they are close to the scalp.  Results are usually in the form of continuous rows of straight lines or even geometric patterns.

  • Braids

Braids don’t always have to be done against the scalp. Synthetic hair can also be braided into the person’s hair, away from the scalp. This is done to create longer lengths. The weight of the extra hair causes tension which can lead to traction alopecia.

  • Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks are made of matted hair (synthetic or real) that is attached to the individual’s real hair, close to the scalp.

  • Drawstring ponytails

Drawstring ponytails are hair pieces that can be attached to a bun to create the look of a ponytail. They are inserted with combs and secured with a drawstring. The tightness of the bun and the weight of the hair piece can put wearers at risk for traction alopecia.

  • Tight buns

Like tight ponytails, tight buns also pull the hair and cause stress to the hair follicles.

Who is Affected by Traction Alopecia?

Traction alopecia most affects women of African descent. However, this is only because of the styling techniques that are common within this ethnic culture.  Traction alopecia can affect any individual who chooses styles that put their hair follicles at risk.

Due to the popularity of hair extensions, this condition is seen more frequently in other certain ethnicities.
